Strength is Beauty

The time, the day, the hour, the minute, the second has arrived and I have followed through with my plan. I’ve joined the CrossFit Clan( I promise I didn’t mean for that to rhyme). This intense cardio, muscle builder, circuit, cross training is made for the strong, and that is so NOT me he-he. Am I insane for joining this conditioning methodology that is used by fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and military units use? I’ve been to two classes already and I must say, I can’t wait for the next class. I must be crazy or just buckle under peer pressure. I joined because I’m always looking for challenges, especially challenges where there is competition and teams are involved. Everyone who has ever done CrossFit has fell in love with it. My number one motivator for CrossFit is my brother Frank. He is addicted and I think he should start teaching CrossFit. I’ve seen his transformation and it is amazing, I’m so proud of him. So what’s next? New workout clothes.

Our first marathon- yup all 26.2 miles

I have a good selection of workout clothes from dancing, but we normally practice in sports bras so shirts are a major necessity at this point. I’ve been doing some shopping and my favorite place to shop for gym gear is Lululemon. The problem with Lululemon is that they rarely have sales. Not only do I need shirts, I need new shoes too. I mean I don’t need shoes, but I really want some new shoes. I will be taking a trip to Nike Outlet soon.

New Year’s Resolution: Don’t put God first

Before you write me off for good and unsubscribe to my blog, just hear me out for a quick minute. I promise I had the same reaction when I heard this message last month. So yes, I realize that it’s February and I am now finally finishing my New Year’s Resolutions. I’m going to show you the before and after list. The before list is what I did before I heard the message about NOT putting God first.

  1. Put God first – spend time with God more
  2. Family and Friend – call them more and spend time with them
  3. Finances- save money
  4. Health- eat healthier and work out 3x a week

The problem here isn’t that I put God first. The problem is I only put Him first and didn’t include Him in everything else. In order to have God the center of my life, He needs to be included in and  throughout all of my goals and resolutions. I prayed over my list and took some time to really focus on how important it is to put God in everything. So many times I’ve created resolutions which turned into distant memories by February of that same year. This year will be different. I want to do God’s will throughout all my resolutions and goals and at the same time remember that nothing is impossible for Him.  Once I figured out how specifically I would put God into every resolution and not just the first one, I came up with a new list.

Spiritual:

  • Morning time with God. Spend my first moment awake thanking God, praying, and reading about Him.
  • Join a weekly growth group at church. I need to stay more involved because I can find many other distractions to keep me too busy for Bible study.

When the Giants won the World Series - exploring

Mental:

  • Read 1 CLEAN book a week. I admit, I am a sucker for dramatic novels. I’m not saying I won’t read action packed or mystery books anymore, but my new rule is, I won’t read any book that I wouldn’t refer to my pastor. I’m just not going to target certain authors where I know there will be drama, sex, and drugs. Instead, my plan is to read inspirational books that plant positive seeds. Later, reflecting on the books and talking about them with my family and friends, and my readers of course
  • Explore the area that I live in. There is so much culture, history, nature, city, and great weather where I live. I need to do some exploratory learning and living.

My little sister and I at our dad's 70's themed party

Relational:

  • Spend time with a friend/s once a week just listening, laughing, and enjoying life with each other. Proverbs 17:22 - A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
  • Talk to ALL of my family more. I have two sisters, but I  only talk to one of them. The one I talk to, I talk to multiple times a day. I gave up on the youngest one. I took it very personal that she doesn’t seem to care whether or not we speak. She doesn’t call me back when I call her or she just doesn’t think to call me. It’s been a month and I haven’t talked to her. That is so ungodly and I am ashamed of myself for trying to teach her a lesson. She isn’t mean spirited, just a little nonchalant. She tells me “she tries”, but that hasn’t been good enough for me. I’m going to reach out as God has always reached out to me. When I ignored His calls and didn’t return His text, He has never stopped calling me, thankfully.
  • Volunteer once a month. This doesn’t need explanation and is my duty as  a Christian and humanitarian.
  • Stay more connected to my readers. Post daily. Tweet even on weekends. Readers, you can hold me accountable.

My favorite nachos and all time happy hour snack

Financial

  • Cook more and eat out once per month. I usually cook around 3 or 4 times per week so this won’t be too bad. However, I go to lunch a lot with coworkers and friends, and I will cut back on that. Not only does it cost money that I could be saving, but it’s hard to know what is in your food and what it has been cooked with and in. When I eat out, and because I’m skinny, I feel like it’s OK to  just eat and eat even when I’m not hungry.  I’m going to control this. Phil 3:19 – Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
  • Save money for online store. I will be launching an online accessory and pretty bible things in May 2011. I refuse to take out loans and will be using my own money for this launch. Being a faithful thither and  a good steward with my finances, have allowed me to save up enough money to start my online store. However, I want to keep saving for further growth.
  • Spend no more than $500 at a time. No splurging. I have a habit of splurging when I know I have enough money saved.

hello world, meet my boo...Mr. Pinkberry

Physical:

  • Eat 5 fruits and veggies daily.  Genesis 1:29And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. I clearly don’t do this. But Will!!
  • Remove salt from my diet and add herbs and fresh veggies. This may mean making 3 out of 4 saltless meals per week. There have been more than a few people in my family with hearth issues and diabetes. I want to beat this and lead a healthier life style.
  • Crossfit and yoga 3 x a week. When I think it’s too tough, I will keep the scripture in mind. Isaiah 26:3 – Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusts in thee. As I’m doing burpees, I will keep my mind on God!
  • Run 3miles 2x a week
  • Salsa social dancing at least 3x a month. I used to go dancing 2x a week and that didn’t include my salsa team’s practices(4 nights a week). Something that I love but have become too lazy to do. When I get there, I love it. I just hate getting ready.
  • Love my body the way it is. I don’t want to obsess about the way I look, but with the way I feel.

Me and E, loving life and loving God

As you can see, when I focused on putting God not just first, but throughout, my second list became more detailed with specifs on how to reach my goals. The first list was just something I(emphasis on me, myself, and I) wanted with no clear milestones or end goals or God. What are your resolutions? If you’re smarter than me, you probably have already started them in January.  Good luck to you.

It’s Tuesday true story: I spit the stupid cookie out!

It’s Tuesday and what is suppose to be day 6 of my Master Cleanse may be day 4. Ugh!!! This is too much.

I decided to do a Master Cleanse to jump start my New Year. I wanted to do the cleanse for several reasons. 1) To clear the toxins and mucus from my body 2) Help me focus and clear my head to make space for new ideas 3) To prove to myself that I’m not addicted to food. So far, I have failed and proved to myself what I was scared to admit. I’m addicted to food and especially cookies.

I thought I was doing fine and came up with a way to do the fast yet trick my addiction to cookies. My body was craving a cookie so bad on day 3, The cookie sitting in front of my desk was not calling my name, it was singing it and very loudly. I had only one option. Eat the cookie. The problem is, if I ate the cookie, my fast would be over. My solution, chew the cookie, then spit it out. Surely if I didn’t swallow the cookie it wouldn’t count. My friends told me that this was cheating and a borderline eating disorder. OK, they are being a bit dramatic, so I wanted to know what you think. If I chewed the cookie and spit it out, does that constitute as cheating?  There was no cookie in my system. Since the day of the cookie incident, it has gone downhill. I ate on Sunday and Monday. I will start over AGAIN today.

Dear God, please grant me the strength and power to accomplish this goal.

I’m joing Crossfit, and that is final!

After that Thanksgiving feast, I am seriously considering joining CrossFit. I’ve been to a CrossFit session once and almost threw up within the first 15 minutes. It felt like a hazing session that I volunteered to be at.

CrossFit is:
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

I have no choice but to join, especially after my food indulgence. God, please forgive me for my gluttony ways. I ate at least my body weight yesterday, how greedy can one person be? People always tell me that I am an overweight person trapped in a little body and I’m starting to believe that. My brother is an avid CrossFit athlete and even has a blog here . He has really inspired me by him taking control of his body and health. I think it’s time for me to do the same.Bring it on!!!

Looking cute while doing crunches

I don’t know about you, but when I look cute, I work out better. At least I feel like when my outfit is on point, so are my crunches. I don’t get tired as fast and I run pretty on the treadmill when I have on my favorite Lululemon tank. Nowadays with stores like Lululemon and Lucy, you can actually look stylish while going to the gym and after for after gym errands. These are some of my favorites from Lululemon.

My 30 days of September

bad habits logo My 30 days of SeptemberI have heard and read and heard and read for years that it takes 30 days to create and break a habit. Great, no problem. Wait, problem, how do I get past one week? I can go through phases where I write lists of things to do and then somewhere down the line my motivation fades. How do I get past that slump?

Steve Pavlina, personal development expert, suggests thinking of the 30 days as temporarily doing something. He says that if you think of it as only 30 days and on the 31st day you can go back to your habit(s), you are more likely to start. However, after the 30 days, you will most likely stick to it. Think about those TV infomercials. When you’re watching one of those “As seen on TV” commercials and you finally muster up the will power to keep from buying that Sham Wow. Then all of a sudden you see and hear “try for 30 days, if you’re not satisfied you get your money back” Well if I don’t know a deal when I hear one!

Starting on September 1st, I’m going to break my lifelong habit of eating sweets every day. Starting on September 1- 30th I won’t partake in any type of sweets including cake, cookies, candy, drinks, doughnuts, pastries, pop tarts, cereal, kettle corn, and anything else that is considered a sweet. Along with this goal, I will exercise everyday even on Sundays. Pray for me.

What bad habits are you willing to give 30 days of your life to change? I will keep you up to date on my progress.

Could you really be addicted to food?

There has been many times where I bought  a box of Oreo cookies and told myself I would enjoy it over the span of a week. By the end of the day those cookies were gone. Why am I so weak right now?  I remember watching an episode of Sanford and Son where Lamont found a mysterious marijuana plant growing in their yard. When Lamont wanted to turn it into the police, it was gone. Smitty had made dinner for everyone which included a nice big salad which was really part of the marijuana. I guess the marijuana plant was so addictive that they kept wanting more and more. It was too funny. Do you ever feel this way when eating junk food? I do. Sometimes I think, “there has to be some type of chemical that makes me want more”. Well according to Discover Magazine I wasn’t way off.

In the article “Is overeating an addiction?” the author reports on research that shows how drug addicts and chronically obese share a similar shortage of receptors  for dopamine. Basically  the brain has certain chemicals that simulates a feeling of pleasure and food serves as this purpose for chronically obese. Read the entire article here.

There is good news and bad news that comes with this article. The good news is, you can beat this addiction. The bad news is you beat it by exercise. Yup, there is no short cut here. When it all comes down to it, exercise is always going to be key. I’m sorry.

Simplify your life in 4 easy steps

I have two calendars that I go by. One is my normal calendar and the other is my “superwoman” calendar. I know that I don’t have the energy or time to be a superwoman every day of the week, so I usually pick two or three days to do this. I started doing this because somewhere in the last 2 years, I have become a “yes” person. I rarely say no to anything or anyone. I always want to help and be in two places at one time. By the end of the day I realize that everything I did was because someone asked me to do it. I was just going with the flow and my to-do list and calendars had been left on the back burner. Where had my day gone?

Talking to my Dad on the phone he told me that he thought my life was way too busy and I needed to simplify. My day had gotten so busy that I didn’t have time to pray in the morning or night. In the morning I would rush out of bed and at night I would fall asleep on the couch typing away at my computer. So, for the last few weeks I have taken  few steps to simplify my life with the help of my Dad:

1. Start your day off with prayer – How can you start your day without thanking God for waking you up? A prayer takes no more than 5 minutes of your day, how can you refuse to do that for someone who keeps you for 24 hours of your day? Prayer helps me focus on Him and accepting what he has planned for me for the day.

2. Look at your calendar and/or to-do list for your entire week – It is so important for me to look at my calendar for the future week/month so that I can see what days I will be busy so when the day comes, I won’t be surprised.

3. Relax- Find time to do nothing. A time for you to just relax. I find about an hour or two a day to get into a  good book.

4. Bedtime ritual – Make a ritual that prepares you for the next day. Find your clothes, write your to-dos, catchup on emails, and pray. This is just a suggestion based on what I do.

That’s my simple living manifesto.  What is yours?

Finding your Flow

Early Autumn Flow1 300x225 Finding your Flow

What is flow:

Finding Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a book that attempts to explain how to live in exceptional moments against the dull background of life. You are in your flow moment when you are doing something challenging that you love and time doesn’t seem to matter. Unlike happiness, flow is complete mental and physical involvement. Flow are exceptional moments with mental focus that encourages action. When you are in your flow, you have a clear vision and focus of your goals.

Where does flow happen:

Flow can happen while you’re dancing, working, running, and hanging out with friends just to name a few. An example of a flow activity would be a game of connect four. Two players who know how to play the game, who know the goal of the game  can concentrate very clearly on reaching their end goal. These players have no question of what is to be done and how. During the entire game, the two players are in this concentration bubble with a concise end goal in sight, and that goal is to win.

How do you find your flow

Below is a list of ways to find your flow from Zen Habits:

1. Find something you love – Easier said than done. Here is a great article about finding your passion

2. Find something that is challenging – If you’re like me,  you will probably not give your undivided attention to something that is too easy and instead multitask.

3.Minimize distractions – Turn your phone and computer off. Let people know that you are busy and not to disturb you.

4. Prepare yourself – Make sure you have everything you need so you don’t have to break your concentration.

5. Isolate yourself – This goes along with eliminating distractions. Sometimes distractions can be your boyfriend, friend, mom, and even your  pet.

6. Let go– Let go of your expectations and excuses,  just do it!

7. Set a timer/deadline – Give yourself a set time so you have something to work towards. I find that I work better under pressure, so having a set time pushes me.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This is my sign

pedestrian 239x300 This is my sign“I can still make it!”, is usually what I say when I see this sign. However, I am usually running and about 30 meters from the actual street. It happens every time. When I come to think of it, it applies to a lot of things in my life. I could look at this in three different ways.

1. I always find a way to get to where I am going, no matter how impervious it is. In this situation, crosswalks were no impediment.

2. I need to get to places sooner so that I don’t have to rush. In this situation, I could have left my house earlier so my walk could have been less brisk.

3. I need to have patience and wait. In this situation, I could have waited until the light changed again.

I thought about this this morning after I wildly ran through the streets of the city. I was trying to catch my company’s shuttle so that I didn’t have to wait 15 minutes to catch the next one. I slowly trudged up the monstrous hills of San Francisco and sped clumbsily down bracing myself for a fall. I thought how careless this was of me. At every crosswalk no matter what the countdown was, I panted to myself, “I can’t make it!” And I did, but at what cost?  Just because I didn’t want to wait for the next shuttle? Just because I wanted to do one more thing before I left my house? Just because I was determined to get on the 7:47 AM shuttle and no one was going to stop me? After all of that, I had to flag down the shuttle driver because in the end, I didn’t get to the stop on time. Thankfully, he gratiously stopped for me. The run to the shuttle with all of my belongings and the  hill workout left me breathless and with time to think about how this translates to my life.

Mark 1:35 shares Jesus work ethic as he went to preach in Galilee
“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.”

I want to pattern myself after this so that I am up early enough to not rush, and more importantly, make time in the morning to pray before I start my day.

Stressed O-U-T!

Today I found myself incredibly stressed out. I keep telling myself not to let people negatively affect my day, but I’m human and can’t control my emotions 100% of the time. As strong as his faith was, even Job got stressed from time to time. In Job 20: 27, Job says, “The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me.” Despite the situation, everyone experiences stress at some point in their life. Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:28-30 to come to him when we are burdened and weary and he will help us rest. In times like now, I have to remember that stress isn’t worth the headache, especially when you can go to God for a spiritual Advil.

Party Party Party, let’s all get wasted

Party Party Party, lets all get wasted

Does the God command us to stay away from intoxication? Do you think it’s a sin for Christians to drink alcohol? From what I’ve read, the answer is yes and no.

The bible tells us in  Ephesians 5:18 to not to get drunk. So yes, God is commanding us as Christians to not get drunk of wine. The bible also tells us as Christians to stay away from doing things that may hinder non Christians from seeking God. He wants us to be an example, a light.
1 Corinthians 8:9-13

“9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.”
I mean really, think about a time when you did something you regret because you were so gone; or you were so faded you can’t even remember if you did something you regret. It’s not a good look, and it’s not cute.

God also doesn’t forbid us to drink wine, beer, or any other alcoholic beverage. There are many scriptures in the bible where the bible discusses drinking in positive terms. Ecclesiastes 9:7 says, “Drink your wine with a merry heart.”

Even though God doesn’t forbid alcohol consumption, be very careful of the addiction that it could cause, drunkenness and the effects of drunkenness, and last but not least possibilities of causing offense to others who are stumbling. Let his light shine in you.

Put Power behind your New Year’s Resolution!

Put Power behind your New Years Resolution! It’s 2010! Thank God for giving us a New Year and a new day. Most people have New Year’s resolutions, and most people fail to keep these resolutions. Do you run into this problem? Do you always make New Year’s resolutions to read the Bible more, to exercise more, maintain a healthy diet, work on your finances? Do you ever forger about your resolutions by mid-year and plan to start them all over again at the beginning of the next New Year? If so, then maybe you should re-evaluate the power behind your New Year’s Resolution.

You say, Philippians 4:13 says “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” While this is true God also says in John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” So God is saying yes, you can do all of these things with my strength behind you. Yes, you can lose weight, regain your finances, maintain your healthy diet, and much more. However, you have to remain with God in order to accomplish these goals. You can’t do it alone. You may say to yourself, “I am doing it with God, I pray for strength to help me go and work out and eat right and spend right, what’s the problem”? The problem may be the reason you are doing this.

Are you planning to lose weight for vanity issues, or are you planning to stay healthy to serve God in a more efficient way?  Are you planning on working on your finances to bless your family and others by showing them God’s will or do you just want a new car for boasting rights? What is the purpose or meaning behind your New Year’s resolution. Ask yourself how will my New Year’s resolution help you serve God. When you answer this question, the answer will give you more motivation to accomplish this goal and also help to look to God and pray to him for assistance.

When you pray to God about your New Year’s resolution,  don’t just ask God to give it to you, but do the following:
1. First ask God for wisdom, on what He wants your New Year’s resolution to be. There is no need to pick your own and struggle with God because that is not His will for you. .Just make it easy on yourself and ask Him first icon smile Put Power behind your New Years Resolution!
2. Ask and pray for wisdom on how He wants you to fulfill this goal.
3.  Don’t rely on yourself, but instead, His strength to push and motivate you.
4. Find someone to hold you accountable. Find a partner and share your goals with that person.
5. Don’t get discouraged with occasional setbacks. Instead, use them to push you even further than you thought you could go.
6. When you accomplish your goals, give the glory to God!!

I know you can do it. Find out what He wants, do it , and thank Him for it.
Remember,  He is the vine, you are the branch. Put the power behind your New Year’s Resolution!

Read this before your next mani/pedi!

Did you know when you look better, you feel better? Literally! According to the American Cancer Society, when you approve your appearance you also improve the way you feel. So basically anytime you need to make yourself “feel better” go to the spa for your mani/pedi.

Before you go to the spa, there are a few things you should know to not only get a safe mani/pedi, but to also make your visit enjoyable. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggests the following to reduce risking getting infections while getting a mani/pedi:

  • Schedule one of the first appointments in the morning when tubs are cleanest. Or make sure your technician disinfects the tub before your pedicure.
  • Bring your own pedicure tools. Use separate tools for pedicures and manicures to prevent contamination between toes and fingers.
  • Skip shaving your legs before the appointment to help prevent bacteria from entering the skin.
  • Have your feet scrubbed with a pumice stone, but never allow technicians to use a razor to remove dead skin.
  • Make sure toenails are cut straight across and smoothed with an emery board. The board should never be shared with anyone else.
  • Never allow your nails to be cleaned out with a sharp object that could puncture the skin; a blunt manicure stick is better.
  • Make sure toes are completely dry when you leave. Extra moisture can lead to fungal growth.
  • Never allow your cuticles to be cut, only pushed back.

Single for the Holidays

beyonce single ladies Single for the Holidays

Single for the Holidays
All my single ladies, all my single ladies. Being single can be fun, spontaneous, exciting, liberating, but at times (especially during the Holidays), it can be a bit lonely.

Sometimes we find ourselves rekindling old flames for Holiday’s sake.  The Holiday brings warmth and cheer and having someone special to celebrate with makes it that much more warmer. Blah blah blah, snore!  The days of being sad and single during the Holidays are over.

Living Single for God
Couples aren’t the only ones entitled and/or deserving of Holiday spirit and cheer. Contrary to popular belief, single does not mean rejection, loneliness, or desperation. While Jesus walked the earth, he was single. 1 Corinthians 7 talk about  the Apostle Paul and how he served God and had a deeper relationship while he was single. You may be a greater to asset at this point of your life to God while you are single. Take advantage of this time with God to clearly understand his purpose for you, without any distractions.

Single and Loving It
Even though you are the Diva-licious Single Christian woman that you are, you might feel a certain void during the Holidays. Here are a couple of great ideas on how to spend your Holiday while being single and hot.

1. Pamper Yourself: You will probably take off time from work. During this time, have a spa day, get a facial, and/or mani/pedi.  You will look and feel your best when you are visiting friends and family.

2.  Go Shopping: Take advantage of all of the Holiday sales. Find that cute dress and heels for your upcoming Holiday party.

3. Work the Holiday Party: With your mani/pedi, facial, and new outfit, you are ready to work the floor. When you feel good on the inside and outside, you have a glow that attracts people to you. Let people know without telling them, that being single is working great for you.

4. Host a Holiday Party: Invite a group of friends over and cook a nice dinner. Tell all of your friends to bring a present under $20 and donate the gifts to a family or charity.

5. Thank God for all of His Blessings: Thank God for keeping you and using you for His will. Ask Him to help you follow his plan and use you for His blessings.

Happy Holidays!!

Stylish Saturday Morning Workout

I can’t speak for you, but when I dress nice for any occasion, I feel motivated. I feel motivated to talk to more people, sit in the front row, and not rush off.  The same thing goes for working out. When I’m cute for my workout, I’m up early, I tend to meet new friends, and I stand in the front row during fitness class.

1. You tend to be more motivated:
You feel good about yourself when you look and wear the clothes that are complimentary to your body.

2. You are more confident:
There is nothing like wearing a workout outfit that is not flattering to your body. Take the time to shop around and find something that is made for your body. Your health is a great investment.

3. You may meet someone cute:
You never know when you’ll be approached by someone who is interested in you.

4. You can run errands right after your workout and still look fab:
Most of my Saturday morning workouts are followed by trips to the grocery store, hair salon, nail shop, and/or mall.

Here are a few cute workout outfits

World Aids Day

Today is the first time that I actually took the time out to observe this day. In the past, it was just another thing that came up and changed the picture on google’s homepage. Actually taking the time to read the bold, sad, stomach dropping stories really made me think about things. Being aware and never too careful is the secret. Here is one story about a young woman named Damaries Cruz:
 World Aids Day
When were you diagnosed with HIV?

I was diagnosed on November 23, 1991.

It’s amazing you still remember the exact date.

It’s part of a celebration of my life, so I have two birthdays. I cut a cake when it’s November 23 and I celebrate that I’m surviving.

I imagine you saw a lot of people die in those years. That was before treatment was available.

Yes. Unfortunately, I just recently lost a friend two weeks ago.

Was this another person who had had HIV for a very long time?

Yes. I think since 1996. Unfortunately, she had cancer too and they were doing chemotherapy. It didn’t go too well.

Tell me what it was like in 1991 to be diagnosed with HIV.

I was diagnosed when I was 21 years old. They told me back then that I had one year to live. I really thought it was the end of my life.
What was your CD4 count? Do you remember?

Let me think. It’s been a long time. The last number I can remember is 600, a few years after that.
Your CD4 count was pretty high, yet you were given a bad prognosis?

Yes, but they gave me that prognosis because they assumed that HIV means “dead,” so you’re going to die regardless. They just didn’t know a lot about it.

How do you think you were infected?

I know how I was infected — it was by my fiancé at the time. I met him and I asked him if he was positive, if he ever tested, and he said, “Yes, I’m negative.” Then I started to have a lot of yeast infections for a whole year, vaginal infections. The doctor thought that I had cancer and he said, “Go and get tested for cancer. Do a biopsy, because I’m sure you have cancer. Do HIV just to rule it out.” The biopsy came back negative and the HIV test came back positive.

When I went home and I told my fiancé, he said, “I knew I was going to take someone with me. I never thought it was going to be you.” He knew all along that he had it!

What did you do?

I reacted to it. It didn’t hit me until later on. I still was going to marry him for a few reasons. For one thing, I didn’t think anyone was going to accept me with HIV. And I was in love with him and my heart doesn’t know how to hate someone.

But the week before the wedding I found him with someone else in bed. He passed it to her too.

You found out later from her?

No. I found out later on from someone else that she had it.

Did you break off the wedding when you saw them together?

Yes, I did. He passed away two years later.

He left a big trail behind him.

Yes, he kind of did.

What happened then? What a traumatic way to end a relationship!

It was really hard because that first year, I really struggled a lot. We were going to get married right away after we were diagnosed; then this happened. I was with my mother in her house, and she had to do everything for me because I said, “Well, I’m going to die in a year anyway.” She had to feed me because I was so depressed that my mind threw me in bed.

What happened is that someone from church passed around. They took me to a retreat and I felt that God healed my soul.

How long was this after you were diagnosed?

A year passed.

When you were first diagnosed, who did you tell?

I told my fiancé first because he was my partner; then I told my mother.

Was your fiancé much older than you were?

Eight years older.

You BROKE your metabolism by crash diets..now FIX it!!

Are you a fan of trendy diets. Do you starve yourself/diet/binge/exercise then start the cycle all over again? If you are doing this you may be breaking your metabolism.

I am naturally thin and tall (which doesn’t hurt), 120 lbs and 5’7. However, I am afraid of getting sick when I’m older because of my poor poor eating habits. I am very very active which leads me to believe I can eat whatever I want. I’m afraid that when I’m too old to be active, my bad eating habits will catch up with me. All of these reasons make me eager to learn about eating healthy and staying active, although I don’t always follow advice, I try. I was listening to the radio this morning about how we break our metabolism and how it can be fixed, so I looked it up.

Apparently there are many ways to boost your metabolism.
1st way: work out for only 4 minutes changing pace every 30 seconds.
2nd way: eat every 2 to 4 hours, and only until you are content
3rd way: food choices
4th way: a good nights sleep

Also keep track of what you eat and the calories you burn with this calorie calculator.

I will be following the steps to stay healthy, think clearly, and get my body tight!! I will keep you posted on my progress.
